I bought new socks recently. — Wait… OK, not exactly earth-shattering news or something I’d lead with at a party. — I hate shopping for clothes [that could be a whole different post], but socks are relatively easy. I’ve been able to buy the same size for all of my adult life. I can’t say that about anything else I normally wear.
Anyway, as I was taking them out of the packages I noticed they had laundry instructions. Really. I’m no master of domesticity, but washing my socks never seemed like a terrific challenge. Except maybe I’ve been doing it wrong all this time. The instructions said to turn the socks inside out before washing. Two different brands of socks. Both tell me to turn them inside out.
Briefly, I look in vain for any explanation for why they should be turned inside out. Will they get cleaner? Last longer? Smell better? Will they keep my feet warmer? Are they less likely to disappear from the dryer? Less static cling? [Not that that's a big problem in Florida most of the time....] Will I stand taller? Walk straighter? Run faster?
Or are they just messing with me?

You mean you don’t turn your socks inside out before you wash them? I turn them inside out when I take them off. Of course, it’s accidental that I do this, but now I’ll keep it going.

That’s a new one for me too. The geek in me googled it up and it supposed to “revitalize your old socks and allow your new socks to last longer”… doesn’t matter much to me, whenever I wash socks, sooner or later one will get lost. I buy more socks than any other item of clothing as I have a drawer full of orphaned socks. Fortunately, all my socks are either white or black so I can partner up the orphaned socks.

I feel stupid because I didn’t know that either! are you buying socks that have pretty little appliques and rickrack around the outside that needs to be protected from the rough washing cycle?

the are just provoding affirmation to folks too lazy to turn them rightside out.

I’m thinking that because the side that’s facing outward during the wash takes the biggest pounding. But, I can’t imagine that socks are thick enough to really make that much of a difference. Mine go in whichever way they are at the time and they all seem equally run down.
