Hearing Things

A friend was telling me about a story she had heard on NPR this morning about musical hallucinations. In particular, the case of a woman who was losing her hearing and suddenly began hearing music constantly playing in her head. What appears to be happening (and this apparently is not uncommon) is that “the region of her brain devoted to auditory work had so little input, so little to do, the cells in that part of her brain began fabricating output. In other words, her brain was hallucinating.”

The person telling me the story said that she frequently hears music too, usually at night when it is really quiet around the house. Which she followed with the best thing I heard today:

Oh my god! My neurons are bored!

3SP: Optional Clothing?

This time of year most of us in the northern hemisphere are bundling up to keep warm. Here in central Florida the temperature has been dropping all the way down into the 40s(F) at night. Brrrr! (heehee)

I don’t miss the single-digit or sub-zero temperatures, but a freezing temperature here really does feel colder than it did up north. Still, some of us acclimate better than others. A few weeks ago on the morning TV weather forecast the reporter encouraged everyone to put on their winter coats. At the time the temperature was 59°(F). Give me a freakin’ break!

Anyway, here are some comfortable clothes to wrap up in. The songs happen to be by excellent singer/songwriters too, so that gives sort of a double theme to the set.

Fledge Like an Eagle

Audubon of Florida has set up an Eagle Cam with a view of a nesting pair of bald eagles. At east one eaglet hatched around 10 January and a friend told me today that she got a glimpse of the eaglet when it was feeding today.

A history of this pair of eagles and this Eagle Cam are here. And you should know that daylight hours in Florida this time of year are approximately from 7:00 to 18:00 EST. (So as I write this, I’m seeing only a black screen on the web cam. But I’ll be checking in tomorrow!)

Addendum 23 January: I caught a couple quick glimpses of the young’un this morning but didn’t manage to capture a good image of it. Here are a couple shots from the webcam though….
