  • The Maths I Say

I am not the biggest geek in the world… really, I’m sure there must be bigger geeks than I am.

Still, in my current reading material is Calculus for Dummies. I don’t need calculus for work. I don’t need calculus at all really. I just… want to know that I can understand calculus. I got as far as Algebra 2 and Trig in high school, but then had to take a [very] basic math class in college. [That's a story in itself... for another time.] I like physics and chemistry, both math-intensive sciences. A lot of my work [and sometimes play] takes me into areas like engineering and programming that use higher math. Some of my students take calculus and [I'm not competitive at all -- really!] I want to relate what they learn there with the drawings they do for me when that’s practical. So on one of my forays in the bookstore I looked through a half-dozen calculus books and picked the Dummies.

I am not the biggest geek in the world… maybe.

    1. hmmmm.. reading a calculus text for pleasure? I’m pretty sure that does qualify you for geekdom.

When you don the pocket protector, it may be time for an intervention…

      :)

Brainy men are smoking hot, by the way…

    2. . . .maybe not. . .

(Actually, I do find the philosophy behind math very exciting. And the best thing of all right now is that today is a GLORIOUS day and I’m home enjoying it. Har har.)

    3. Well that “hobby” certainly puts you in the running. J/k! I had a pretty easy time with algebra and trig in school but then I hit somewhat of a roadblock with Calculus. I think it was more about the fact that I was a senior, was already accepted into a least one college that I didn’t mind going to, so I just kind of checked out.

    4. hahhah… You are a riot! I went as far as calculus in college. Nonetheless, I can’t even remember how to do simple polynomial factoring: 14y^5 – 4y^3 + 2y. There is no way I can remember calculus nor have the ability to re-learn something like that. Have fun!! :)

    5. oh, i think that is cool. i was a straight C student in math except the one year in jr high that we did independent study. that year, i actually blew thru algebra. then went to a new school where i had to retake the same classes in a traditional setting and suddenly i was no good at math again.

good luck with your calculus (-:
