3SP: Fillintheblank_ionaire
I haven’t posted a 3-Song Playlist in a long time. The premise is simple, I find three songs that are linked in some way, usually thematically. This one isn’t perfect, but it was fun nonetheless.
It started with a car commercial. The song is Billionaire by Chelsea Williams. It’s a catchy tune and she has a sweet voice. In this video she talks a little about her experiences between music breaks.
That song reminded me of If I had $1000000 by Barenaked Ladies.
So I had mentally jumped from billionaire in the 2010′s to millionaire in the 1990′s. Wouldn’t it be funny, I thought, if there was a song from the 1970′s about something like if I had a thousand dollars? Well, I searched my memory and when that failed [after about 30 seconds] I searched the interwebs. I found Ten Thousand Dollars in Pennies [written by the incomparable Shel Silverstein and recorded by Bobby Bare], but it’s about someone who has the money and has trouble spending it. Doesn’t fit the theme. And there are several well-known songs from the 70′s about money — love and money, evils of money, stealing money, money money money… even songs by Eddie Money — but the one that I think comes closest to the theme of this 3-Song Playlist is Free Money by Patti Smith. As I understand it, the song is for Smith’s mother who speculated on what she would buy if she won the lottery. But she never bought lottery tickets.
