Growing up in Kentucky it was common to see Robins, Blue Jays, Cardinals, and dozens of other types of birds that I never learned to identify. In Florida, of course, there are many that I still think of as exotic — pelicans, herons, egrets, and others for example. Even though I live near a lake*, this morning was the first time I’ve seen one of these in my front yard.

*It’s pretty hard to live anywhere in Florida that is not near a lake. Every puddle that doesn’t dry up in a week gets a name and has the roads detoured around it.

Year of the Fire Dog

Happy New Year! Today we celebrated the beginning of the lunar year in China, also known as the Spring Festival. This is year 4703 on the Chinese Calendar and it is a Year of the Fire Dog. You can read about what this year might have in store for you at sites like this one.

Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger. The flight had a teacher on board and I was teaching in Central Forida so it is one of those moments that I will always remember. The kids I teach in high school now were all born after that…. A few years ago, the subject came up at work. We compared where we were in our lives in 1986. I was teaching high school. One coworker was a junior in high school. The other coworker was in second grade. [sigh]

We just ended the year of the Monkey, a mischievous animal. Friday morning on my way to work, I thought I heard the radio say, “How do you know an outie is an outie?” Well, if you have to ask…. Oh wait, it’s an Audi commercial. Never mind.

Always leave ‘em laughing!

Freaky Co-inky-dink

The drive between my two homes usually takes about 14 hours. Even though I always have tunes blasting the whole way and listen to a CB radio part of the way, driving that long can get pretty boring. And when I get bored I get even more weird than usual. Somewhere in Georgia this trip I was behind one of the new Volkswagen Beetles for a few miles. I started to feel like I was being watched. I didn’t have my camera within reach so I… um “borrowed” this image:

Do you see it? Can you hear it? It’s the Beatles! I’ve Just Seen a Face. And it’s on the Help! soundtrack. Maybe this will help:

Or maybe I’m way beyond help….

Odd Bits

Wilma passed to the south of us. We got a lot of wind and rain, some tornadic activity, a cold front, and Monday off from school. Our high temperatures the last couple days have been lower than our low temperatures of the last few months. And somebody had to start passing this photo around on email. It wasn’t me!

This other photo is also going around on email. The story with this one is:

Sisters Mary Catherine, Maria Theresa, Katherine Marie, Rose Frances, and Novice Mary Kathleen left the Convent on a trip to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City and were sight-seeing on a Tuesday in July. It was hot and humid in town and their traditional garb was making them so uncomfortable. They decided to stop in at Patty McGuire’s Pub for a cold soft drink. Patty had recently added some special legs to his barstools which were the talk of the fashionable eastside neighborhood. All 5 Nuns sat up at the bar and were enjoying their Cokes when Monsignor Riley entered the bar through the front door with Father McGinty for a cold drink when they were shocked and almost fainted at what they saw.

Finding Neverland

In the middle of dinner one time, my date looked across the table at me and said, “You don’t see things like normal people, do you?” Nope, and it’s actually a trait I’m often proud of although I have learned to blend in and not look like a social misfit quite so much.

I was reminded recently of a trip to Disney’s Magic Kingdom. Even though I live near several big theme parks, I rarely visit them unless I’m with out-of-town guests. For most people, going through It’s a Small World once is enough to last a lifetime. It took WAY too much of my life to get that song out of my head…. (While making that link I see that even on their official website it says, “After it’s over, just try to get that tune out of your head.” Who knew?) But on this particular trip I found myself sitting in one of those stupid little boats and hearing that insipid song yet again. This time though I was with one of my nieces who was five years old at the time.

OMG! Everyone should see Disney World with a five-year-old. She was so excited by every one of those little dolls. Even the song seemed less annoying. Later that night, she sat on my shoulders while we watched the fireworks with similar enthusiasm. For most of that day, I saw things through her eyes and it opened my own.

Oh, and I finally saw Finding Neverland a few days ago. It’s a good thing I’m a hard-hearted curmudgeon or I might have cried at the end of it….
