I’ve spent a lot of hours the last several weeks helping build this:
So our drama kids can do this:
Fools by Neil Simon runs this weekend.

Actually, the weather here has been fairly pleasant and was especially nice for a certain party last Saturday night. A colleague snapped this photo of me amidst the festivities. I sorta had three different costumes this year (all pretty lame). But can you believe that I dyed my beard to match the mask for this one? [If the answer is "yes" I have some land to sell you. It's um, really close to the water....]

Do you like the “grill” on this? I floss! Our students did a story on grills for their news broadcast recently. One student described them as “jewelry for your teeth.” At least, I’m pretty sure that’s what he meant. What he actually said was more like “jooree fo yo teef”. Remember what I said about the future of America?

I happened to catch part of A&E TV’s Breakfast With the Arts on Sunday and heard a young singer/songwriter named Corrine Bailey Rae. She described one of her songs as being about “the space between your head and your heart.” That phrase so caught my imagination that I don’t even remember which song it was. (I swear, sometimes I think that people standing next to me can hear the noise in my head.)
Anyway, while the physical distance between head and heart is a scant few inches they often seem to be miles apart. In fact, I think (or feel) that they must dwell in separate worlds. And if I hadn’t been so self-involved, I could probably tell you whether that’s what her song is about.

[Update: To clarify, this is a photo by me, not of me.]

Ernie (as those of us who know Ernesto well call him) was much milder than expected. I’m grateful for that even though my day was a total waste. But I did enjoy being able to roll over and sleep late. That was tempered by spending all morning with a sinus headache. Ah well, I’m learning to embrace both yin and yang. Wait, does that sound dirty?

One of these days I’m going to get an enlarged print of this photo. I was so intent on the distant elements when I took it though, that I didn’t realize my shadow was in the lower part of the frame. I haven’t decided whether to crop it, try to erase me, or leave it as is for all those people that complain that I never appear in any of my photos. (Well, that’s sorta the point of being behind the camera!) And when I told that to Jenn, she said I should post it for HNT. Sometimes I need very little encouragement….

I’m not one to wear my heart on my sleeve, but I frequently wear my humor on my shirt collar. I often wear a button — usually humorous, sometimes pithy, occasionally both. This one I like to wear when returning from a break. Students are back in class on Monday. Sure, I might forget to put this on when I’m stumbling around in the dark that morning. But even if I’m not wearing it, I’m gonna be thinking it!

This will be my last HNT, at least for several weeks. My schedule is going to be getting more hectic and more erratic. Besides, I’m never as comfortable being the photographed as the photographer. I’ll still be dropping by to see YOUR photos though and I hope some of you will still drop by here once in a while. As a farewell, I’ve put together a collage of past HNTs. This is all of me (that I’m willing to reveal).

Apparently, I’m a cubist….

On Fridays we are encouraged to wear school colors (orange and white) — sort of the academic version of casual Fridays. Shortly after the start of school last fall I was in one of the local shopping malls (which is a rare occurrence, believe me) and I saw these on sale for $20. I figured, “What the hell,” and I’ve worn them almost every Friday since. They’re not really all that comfortable for as much as I’m on my feet in a typical day. Oh, the sacrifices I make for my profession if not for fashion…. Students will frequently comment on them. And I have never been hit by a car when I’m wearing them!
